Kids Colony 2

A grand-opening ceremony in May 2013 marked the end of many hours of hard work by city staff and volunteers, bringing to life the "Bridges Settlement" portion of Kids Colony 2 playground. The facility, located at 5151 North Colony Blvd., also features one of the first all-inclusive playspaces in the region. See the photos and links below for a look back at the reconstruction of one of The Colony's most beloved playgrounds ...

More than 20 years ago in 1993, residents and businesses in The Colony came together to build a playground. There was lots of planning, fund raising, scheduling, and building - all done by volunteers! This little town in Texas made a great effort and the result was a community built playground named Kids Colony. The years and hot Texas sun have taken their toll on the expansive wooden structures and the process has started to replace the beloved playground.

In 2011, Phase I of the rebuild of Kids Colony was completed with the addition of a nature themed play structure, pavilion, picnic tables and benches. The second phase of the rebuild of Kids Colony was completed in 2013, and includes an all-inclusive playground. It is a fun and exciting playspace which ensures children and adults of all abilities have access without barriers to play and develop of physical, cognitive and social skills.

An invitation is extended to the community to continue joining neighbors, friends, businesses and civic organizations in rebuilding and expanding Kids Colony 2. Be on the look-out for updates on opportunities to become a part of this great project. In addition to the community fund raising effort, a portion of the funding for the playground is being provided by the Community Development Corporation.

More than 80 volunteers showed up on Saturday, March 31, 2012, to help with the demolition of the final section of the original Kids Colony playground.  In just a few short hours the entire old structure had been torn down to clear the way for the next section of Kids Colony 2. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to help, and to the groups who organized their members to participate: Young Men's Service League, Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity at UNT, Daisy Troop No. 4723, and The Colony Home Depot's "Team Depot."
